Pride(ful) Fashion

Support your LGBT community this month to commemorate the kickstart of Pride Month. LGBT stands for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community and LGBT pride, or gay pride, is a movement grounded in the beliefs that opposes the discrimination of lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender individual. LGBT Pride serves to create a community, in which LGBT individuals can celebrate their sexual and gender identities.

The most common symbol that represents the LGBT community universally is the rainbow flag, including the colors red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, indigo, and violet. The use of the rainbow flag to symbolize LGBT Pride originated in San Francisco, California, but since then, the use of a rainbow flag to symbolize LGBT Pride has spread worldwide.

Pride Month is a very exciting month for the LGBT community, as it involves numerous pride events, including “pride parades and marches, rallies, commemorations, community days, dance parties and large festivals” (Wikipedia). It is truly a festive and spirited time for the LGBT community, as well as it is for their supporters.

LGBT events, including Pride March, are held nationwide, and even globally in some countries. These events are carnivalesque and far from boring, as they are some of the most visually and emotionally stimulating. If you have never been to a pride event, or are not as involved into the LGBT community and LGBT Pride, you should attempt to attend one. It is truly an experience filled with lots of pride, joy, love, passion, and colors.

The outfits that make an appearance at Pride events, such as Pride March, Pride festivals, etc., are just as extravagant and as priderful as rainbows. One of my favorite things about the LGBT community, and their supporters, is how proud they are, despite social stigmas and social shames associated with identifying as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender individual, with homosexual and/or bisexual orientations. Their community truly promotes the unification of people, highlighting the important act of love and acceptance that our world often forgets. In addition, their spirit and overall energy of the LGBT community can turn anyone’s frown upside, all while adding some much-needed color and personality to your life.

In order to commemorate and highlight the beginning of Pride Month, many retailers and designers have put together a “Pride Collection” for customers to purchase to show their support and their spirit.

  1. Pac Sun | LA Hearts x Pac Sun
PacSun recently released a fairly simplistic collection of pride apparel for customers to indulge in. Many of the pieces within the LA Hearts x Pac Sun Pride Collection involve utilizing basics, including crop tops, tube tops, and t-shirts, and incorporating rainbow patterns or text that show support for the LGBT community. The great part about the LA Hearts x Pac Sun collection is that many of pieces can be worn outside of pride events and can be worn casually. Most of the pieces are fairly casual and can serve as great basics to add into your collection. Worried that this collection may be out of your budget? Well, let me put that worry to rest, as $30 is the absolute maximum amount of money that one would have to pay in order to purchase a piece from their collection.
  2. Converse x Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus is a well-known advocate and supporter of the LGBT community and Converse made an executive decision to team up with LGBT activist in order to create a line of shoes for Pride Month. The collection consists of apparel, as well as shoewear. The collection is the definition of BRIGHT, ECCENTRIC, and PLAYFUL, in order to best represent the LGBT community. The shoewear consists of playful patterned shoes, including platform high-tops, rainbow patterns, polka-dot patterns, sequins, and rainbow soles. I am personally a big fan of the platform sneakers from the collection! The apparel consists of a track suit, which includes rainbow detailing, as well as a polka-dotted tee that comes in two colors. The collection has fluidity and consistency within the designs, which is difficult to achieve with such a vast color palette. The Converse x Miley Cyrus collection is incredibly playful, youthful, colorful, prideful, and everything LGBT.

*All the proceeds from the collection will go to LGBT foundations, including Happy Hippie Foundation, RainbowYOUTH, It Gets Better Project, and Minus 18*

  3. Pride Pack | adidas US
Apparel, shoes, and accessories are all included in adidas’ Pride 2018 collection. On the insole of every shoe in the “Pride Pack” collection, the words “Love Unites” logo is placed inside the shoe. The collection offers some rainbow colored attire, shoes, and accessories, but mostly consists of electric-colored, or vibrant, colored apparel and accessories. The collection also includes a wide range of pastel-colored apparel. The difference between the Pride Pack collection and their normal apparel is the versatility, vibrancy, and playfulness of the colors utilized in their collection. The color scheme that they chose to follow through with is phenomenal and just as vibrant as Pride Month, especially the shoes! This collection is also great if you are looking to purchase vibrant colored athletic wear. Do not miss out on this collection!
  4. Pride Collection 2018 | Levi’s
Levi’s released an exceptional Pride Collection that incorporates a wide variety of pieces to choose from, including clothes and accessories. The theme of Levi’s collection is “I AM ______,” in order to celebrate and highlight individuality and equality, with their black and white graphic tees. The collection includes a handful of graphic tees that include a rainbow theme within their product. The most outstanding piece from the collection is their Trucker Jacket, which has been customized with rainbow embroidering. Levi’s 2018 Pride Collection marks their fifth year supporting Pride, and this collection does not disappoint at all. The entire collection consists of very wearable pieces that would work as great additions to one’s wardrobe, whether it is Pride Month or not.

*100% of the proceeds from the Pride Collection will be donated to the Harvey Milk Foundation and Stonewall Community Foundation (two LGBT partner organizations)*
