Fashionably Controversial

The fashion industry runs into its’ fair share of controversy, as designers everywhere attempt to become the most innovative, the most original, and the most fashion-forward clothes, all while attempting to break the barriers within the fashion industry. In addition to these numerous facets, designers must motivate consumers to purchase their products. As a result, their designs must contain an element of approachability and familiarity, in which consumers can incorporate these items into their wardrobe, with little or no effort.

Motivated by creating designs that are innovative, unique, and somewhat practical designs that complement the current trends of the season,

Designers, as well as all members of every facet of the fashion industry, including consumers, fall victim of consuming in fashion that raises red flags and may spark a wildfire of controversy. Fashion, the fashion industry, and the consumers of fashion often set out to push the boundaries of society, in one way or another, and make a statement with their fashion sense.

Some statements are received better than others, while other statements leave a horrible taste in your mouth.

Some of the biggest scandals of 2018 in the fashion industry, include:

  1. Melania Trump | Zara’s “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” Jacket
    • Melania Trump managed to get individuals’ bloods boiling when she arrived to McAllen, Texas, sporting a Zara jacket from a 2016 collection that resembled a military-style, with the words, “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?”on the back of the jacket. It became a topic of concern, especially since Trump was on her way to meet with displaced children, who had been separated from their families. The trip was centered around a humanitarian cause, yet Trump’s jacket made it seem as though she truly did not care for the cause, or about anything.
The main debate and controversy arose around the context of Trump wearing the jacket, and many found her choice to wear this jacket to be offensive and in poor taste.

      • The purpose behind the entire visit was clouded by Melania Trump’s ignorance in deciding to display such a statement, quite literally, in a context that was completely inappropriate.
      • Melania Trump should have left this jacket back in 2016, just like Zara did.melania-trump-zara-jacket
  2. H&M | “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” Hoodie
    • H&M caused a worldwide storm with the release of their “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” hoodie. The hoodie itself did not raise questions, concerns, and tempers, but it was the way that the company decided to showcase the hoodie. On H&M’s website, they displayed a young African-American boy wearing this, “coolest monkey in the jungle” hoodie, which caused a storm of negative feedback towards the company.
      • Many felt that a black boy wearing this hoodie was a prime example of racial insensitivity and blamed the company for having a lack of social awareness.
      • Many vowed to never shop at H&M, and singer, The Weeknd, shared his shame and disappointment on social media, tweeting that he would never work with the company any longer.
        • #BoycottHM hashtag was created as a result of this racially insensitive scandal, leaving the company at odds with many consumers.
    • While the company apologized, and proceeded to take down the photograph and the product, many individuals were left shook and appalled at the company.636511823414636355-AP-BRITAIN-H-M-96426139

Everything is all fun and games until you begin offending others with your fashion statements. It is safe to say that these incidents rubbed people the wrong way, and rightfully so.
That’s the controversial word of the fashion industry!
Stay tuned for more controversy!

New Merch, New Shopping Trip

This last week I spent shopping and endlessly spending my paycheck in useless places, even though you can never have too many clothes. This shopping trip I stopped by Ragstock, Crossroads Trading Company, Urban Outfitters, & Buffalo Exchange.

I generally can find items at these stores for reasonably priced. As you can tell below, rompers and overalls are perfect transitional pieces, as we transition from winter to spring. Florals and lace are also making a statement this season, especially on the runway. Girly accents, such as lace and floral, are a great way to make a cute statement this season.

Similarly, t-shirt dresses and slip dresses are also in this season. T-shirt dresses and slip dresses are easy to layer, and work as great layering pieces for the colder Spring days.

Additionally, platform shoes are taking the stages of many runway shows and are being manufactured by brands, such as DIVIDED and Steve Madden. Puma and Rihanna even teamed up recently, creating a brand of platform creeper sneakers.

A bomber jacket is an absolute must this season. Bomber jackets are sold everywhere currently, and you do not want to skip out on a chance to miss out on this amazing, timeless trend.

Sweaters and jackets are always a must-have, as we transition. Similarly, fringe is making a comeback this season and you would be silly not to find yourself a fringe jacket. A simple fringe jacket can make such a statement, even paired with a simple outfit.

Of course, nude tones are in, explaining the nude baseball cap and nude sweater. This season focuses on minimalist street wear, all while simultaneously making a subtle statement. Nude and flesh tones are great, as you can pair them with just about anything.

Lastly, embellished vintage belts are sold online and off-line in stores nationwide. The embellishment and vintage feel of the belts provide a casual, yet chic statement. It does not matter whether or not your outfit is bland, embellished belts will assist in dressing up many outfits, while making a subtle statement. Wearing embellished belts with basics, such as my black high-waisted pants, creates a timeless look that can be completed with any basics.

Basics are also making a great comeback, still insinuating the idea behind a minimalist look this season. This can be easy achieved with basics that with cutouts, distressing, etc. Basic tees are essential this season, as this season focuses on a relaxed, yet put together look.
