Life Hack #34 – Take Notes

I love taking notes, and then color-coding them, and then perfecting them to the closest thing to perfect.

I tend to only be this meticulous with taking notes and absorbing information when I am in class.

Taking notes, and I mean literally writing, or typing, down notes, reminders, or information that you should retain is especially important.

Outside of class, there are a million reasons why you should be taking notes, mentally, but most importantly, physically taking notes. Beyond the fact that human beings are incredibly forgetful, human beings are incredibly talented at making mistakes, and even ignoring important details. Taking notes can save you from a lot of stress, inconveniences, and trouble, all which are things that we do not enjoy.

My favorite way to keep track of my life, and every aspect of my life, is to jot down a to-do list. I also love to use planners and calendars, and the more, the merrier. I own at least three calendars and a handful of planners that I love to use, mostly for fun.

I did not used to be like this.

In fact, a few years ago you could not catch me taking notes or using a planner, especially for fun. There was a time when I thought all these tasks were simply unnecessary and a waste of time. Boy, I was wrong!

Beyond to-do lists, planners, and calendars, when I am absorbing directions or instructions of any sort, or am receiving important information that I would like to access and be reminded of easily, I am quick to grab a pen and a pad of paper. If the information is successfully transferred onto a piece of paper that I keep somewhere safe, the information is able to be accessed with ease. Most importantly, the information that you are accessing is correct, accurate, and untainted.

All human beings, including myself, are guilty of lying to ourselves that “we will remember that thing that we thought kind of hard about writing down.” This results in more stress and more problems, as you are forced to construct a semi-accurate version of the information. Your version of the information is simply based on how much you absorbed the information, your ability to listen intently, and your memory. The chances of your almost-accurate information being correct is more often low rather than high. While your version of the information is not a lie and may convey “the same idea,” it is not and will not be correct. Most commonly, while the big picture of the information may have been received, individuals tend to miss the details, which are the important parts.

Taking notes is especially pertinent for those trying to pay attention to details.

Details are hypothetically smaller than the bigger picture. Human beings are all guilty of forgetting the details, or ignoring the details. But, the details are just about the only time that we should be paying attention. Instead of absorbing the details, we tend to focus on the bigger picture and are unable to appreciate, or even acknowledge, the importance of the details. Not knowing the details of any situation you encounter most often  results in mistakes, more trouble, etc.

We are all human, so we are allowed to make mistakes. But, do not let that be your excuse for not paying attention to the details of anything. It is important that you learn how vital it is to recognize the magnitude of importance that details, or skipping details, play in our lives.

Accuracy and meticulous tendencies, such as taking notes in important, information-filled situations, is extremely beneficial things that one should practice.

Even with meticulous tendencies and over-alert awareness for paying attention to the details, one can forget the details.

Can you blame them, though?

Details are just so small, and our society celebrates and promotes the concept of “the bigger picture.” Once again, the small, minute details of an otherwise bigger picture are overlooked, as if they do not play a huge role in the creation of a bigger picture.

Within a bigger picture, one can find one big picture. One can also find hundreds of small, minute details that come together to create the “bigger picture,” in which you are staring at. Without the small, minute details, there would be no bigger picture. Or, the bigger picture would just be a blank, white canvas that looks just like the others.

From experience when I am beginning a new job and am learning all my job duties, and all the details behind my duties, I always grab a pen and paper to jot down any notes, or information, that I find important, I feel is emphasized, or I feel as though I may forget.

Let’s just say that I take a lot of notes.

Just because you are taking down notes does not mean that you do not have a good memory, or that you cannot handle life. It just means that you have accepted the fact that our ability to go beyond listening, or pretending to listen, to information and actually proceed to process, acknowledge, remember, and implement every single task correctly without any reminders, or without forgetting, is not as great as we would like to believe.

We all would like to remember every little thing without having to take notes, or make reminders, details and all. But, this is simply not realistic.

Write down everything if you so please, especially if it is going to assist you in retaining information accurately. Our brains can only remember so much!

Most of us have had our entire lives, minus our infancy, to practice taking notes.

Let’s take it outside of the classroom, how about that?

Life Hack #4 – Remember to R&R

What does R&R stand for? Let me answer that question for you. It stands for rest and revive.

Our bodies, which are constantly in motion and working to keep our precious bodies healthy and happy, need time to rest and revive. This is why getting the proper amount of sleep and rest is particularly important. We, as individuals, are programmed to fatigue sometimes, when we are overworked, not getting enough sleep, or not getting sleep at all.

Though we all say that we can sleep when we are dead, this is something that could especially become detrimental towards our health. Studies have shown that without the proper amount of rest, not only are we unable to revive, but we find ourselves gaining weight, losing weight, getting groggy, and getting grumpy. It even from time to time affects our ability to memorize and remember things.

Resting plays a large role in our body, and in order to be that happy and healthy versions of ourselves, we need to be resting every night.

Some days sleeping just does not cut it, in fact, some days I find myself exhausted even after a good night’s sleep. This is our body telling us that we either are stressed, overwhelmed, and perhaps not treating our bodies correctly.

Taking time off, or away from our rigorous schedules, is something that we unfortunately cannot do very frequently, as most of us are in school, or at work all day. It’s truly hard to find time sometimes to rest and revive.

Every day, I try to take about 30 minutes in the morning to revive my system after a night’s rest. I usually simply lay down and look at the not-so-empty walls of my studio apartment, thinking about how lucky I am that I have found time to relax.

Taking a small portion of your day, morning, or afternoon, or evening, to simply just unwind and seperate yourself from your daily stressors plays a huge role in feeling more rejuvenated, happy, and healthy.

We all need to rejuvenate sometimes, and you truly should not be so hard on yourself, if you just can’t seem to move out of your bed. In this fast-paced society, catching a break is truly hard, and sometimes, it leads me to believe that we should all have a vacation period at least once every few months.

Though taking breaks is frowned upon by society, it is one of the most vital ways to stay sane and happy. The idea that we, as individuals, have to constantly be in motion and working, or doing something, is absolutely absurd. I understand the need to want to make the best out of our lives, however, taking time off to relax and revive will leave you in a much better headspace.

Recently, I took a break from school, friends, and even from my full-time job. And, man does time go by fast when you are resting and reviving. Similarly, I also took time to be away from my phone, another stressor that does not allow us to rest and revive ( I actually just broke my phone yet again). I currently am taking a break from all these stressors and simply focusing on reviving myself to get ready for another year of grueling activities.

There’s always time to rest and revive. And, if you’re struggling to find some time to rest and revive, then I would suggest reconsidering your work-load, your personal life, and other aspects of your life that do not seem to be allowing you this freedom.

Take a breath every once in a while, and just breathe. Even if it is only for ten minutes, making time for R&R is underrated, and unacknowledged.

How you spend your time resting and reviving is all up to you, as everyone has different ways they spend time unwinding. I try to utilize my free time journaling, blogging, coloring, hiking, practicing photography and/or napping.

Life Hack #3 – Wholesome Learning

Days should be spent learning, and not just the typical textbook learning, but learning from other sources outside of your traditional learning tools. Experiment with expanding your horizons with things you encounter every day, whether it be learning more about people, science, odd topics, the news, etc. Maybe, even learn more about work, or where your even from.

We, as a society, are blessed with technological advancements that allow us to access the most variety of information. We are not limited to the mindless pages of our textbooks; we have our whole universe to learn about.

If learning is limited to our textbooks, we are simply confining our minds from a handful of knowledge. All of our learning at our educational facilities may not cater to all of our needs, values, and general interests. That is okay. Learning things you do not like is also helpful, as you can find it interesting or find it somewhat interesting.

Learning, beyond traditional learning, can be a fun, enjoyable activity, and being informed, and most importantly mindful, about what is going on in our world is important.

We can create our own value systems, morals, and broaden our minds with information that is not given to us directly from our school. Additionally, enjoying what you are learning is something that we can all become a little bit better about, seeing that this kind of accessibility to information of all genres, topics, and sub-topics, is not something that we all are able to attain.

Taking something out of every day and taking interest in something that you enjoy, or do not enjoy, is a life skill that assists in keeping life fun, lively and interesting.

Tap into your curious side and experience, learn and be knowledgeable about learning, and the power of learning. Being knowledgeable and accessing, and processing new information, can be an exciting.

Want to be in the loop? Give learning a try. Utilize your life skills that allow you to access the world, at the ease of your finger tips. The Internet and Google can become your best friends.

Experience some passion towards making your life more wholesome and meaningful. If you truly want to juice the fruit, learning will help you get the juice. I can assure you that!

Growing Pains: Liberate Me

Be the most genuine form of yourself. It’s liberating!

As difficult as it may be sometimes, as we are constantly changing and growing, being the person you are and feel at this very moment is something one must learn to do as we grow into different stages in our lives.

How you genuinely spend your days alone is no one’s business and does not dictate the person you are.

Being genuine means honesty, which is the ultimate form of kindness and genuinity. You will be surprised how much love will be in your life when you begin embracing every bone in your body, and begin being honest with the most important person in your life, yourself.

This genuine person is the real person behind all of your Instagram posts, and perceived outward images.

Who are you when you are all alone?

Who are you today? Who are you tomorrow? Will you be the same person? Will you be happy with yourself?

The amount of love and happiness that will come out of being genuine is incredible. Plus, feeling like you have no shame or anything to hide or lie about is a liberating aspect of unleashing your true self. Unlimited amounts of happiness and love is not hard to attain, if you are living for your own self, free of labels, or societal expectations. This should also bring a sense of stability within your life, as you will not be constantly changing who you are for others. And, any source of stability is a blessing in this world.

Finding yourself at any age and embracing the person you are at this current moment is a hard feat for anyone, including myself.

But what I have learned is that, if you stop basing your image of yourself based on what others are doing or what they think, and do what you truly want to be doing, you can find a genuine sense of self. This applies to any aspect of your life.

Living a life based on what you want others to think of you is toxic. Constantly spend more time embracing yourself and celebrating yourself.

Days may be long and challenging as you try to find out what you truly want in this world, but finding peace within yourself is one way to combat the chaos of our society.

I stand by the idea that anything you do with your friends, you should feel comfortable doing by yourself. Finding that genuine side of yourself will allow you to embrace the idea of independence, find a drive to live your life as you would like to, and allow you to comfortably spend time alone, rather than always in a group setting.

Completely isolating yourself is not the goal of finding yourself. You need to be able to find a balance between being with friends and company, and making time to spend time doing what you love.

You should love every aspect of your life, just as you should love every aspect of yourself.

Embrace your soul and be a soulful, passionate person that you were put on this world to be.

How To Make Work More Fun

UGH. BLAH. BLECH. We all get it….we all hate going to work, and even the idea of working kind of sucks.

Every day that we have to go into work there’s that little voice inside the back of your head telling you to call into work sick, come up with some malignant lie about how your grandmother is dying in the hospital, etc. Here are some ways you can make work a little more enjoyable:

  1. Befriend your coworkers – Being in an environment with friends can make all shifts seem shorter and less grueling. The more friends you are able to make at work, the more enjoyable the job may seem. Cracking jokes and asking your coworkers questions, or simply just treating them like they are your friend, will assist in making work seem more of a fun environment than just a workplace.
  2. Put in 100% effort when going into work – As backwards as this seems, keeping yourself busy with mindless actions can help the day go by faster. Pick up the slack of your other coworkers, and find new things to do around your work space that can help both you and your team.
  3. Think of all the other things you would not be doing if you were not at work – Literally, what else would you be doing/? I know I’m not the only one that does not want to move or crawl out of their bed in the morning just because you have to pee. Most of the population does a version of Netflix and chill, or just hang around doing nothing.
  4. Think of the money you are making – Money, though it does not dictate much, is necessary to survive in this world. Think of all the money you are making, as you contrast, what you would be doing at home not getting paid.
  5. Find a decent paying job that does not require overtime hours to make a living – Being paid strictly minimum wage is rough, especially when the perks are not so enticing. Try finding a job where you can make tips, which will increase your pay just a little more. You could also just find a job that pays more than minimum wage, try shooting for something that may be a reach. Everyone needs to make a living, wherever you decide to work, make sure to weigh out the pros and cons of how much your pay is, and whether you feel as though you are getting paid evenly for the work that you put in.
  6. Try to stay at a job for longer than six months – Constantly trying to find a new job, because you are bored of your other job, or got fired, etc. is draining. Job hunting is a hard feat as it is, and finding the perfect job is not quite realistic when you are just trying to make ends meet. Having to be trained at nine different new things, having to meet new coworkers, having to figure out the ropes of a new job is ultimately tiring. Finding a steady long-term job will help decrease levels of anxiety about every aspect of working. Once you’ve learned the ropes of a new job, stick with it for a while. Sticking with a job can come with rewards, such as bonuses, wage raises, and a great recommendation.
  7. Figure out what you are good at – Figure out what you are good at and stick with it. Find a job that lines up with your interests and is not extremely stressful, because it is not something you excel in. Finding your niche can help set you apart from other workers, and show your team where the best position to utilize you is. Once you’re being put to good use, you will find that the rest of your team will have less anxiety, as you will excel in that position, and the compliments will be flying out the door.
  8. Messing up sucks – This is slightly negative, but you will make mistakes anywhere you work. It is impossible to be perfect, and yes, everyone knows how much messing up sucks. The longer you are with a company, the less likely you are to make mistakes, as you begin to master your work environment. Take the constructive criticisms as what they are, not as a dictator of what you are worth. Similarly, the longer you work somewhere, the easier it is to overcome your mess ups and hopefully joke around about your mistakes in the past.
  9. Communicate with everyone on the team – Learn to communicate with others on your team. The more you communicate, the less likely there will be confusion. Speak with your manager if you are feeling like you are being scheduled too much or too little. If you need a favor, tell your other coworkers what you need from them. Ask, talk, and communicate – these are all things that will make work much less painful.
  10. Be on good behavior around the owner – Being on good behavior in general is a must in making your work experience much more enjoyable. Being in the good graces of your owner or management staff is something that you will realize is vital is maintaining a job, getting good recommendations, etc. Management is who you report to generally if you are beginning a job, they are constantly watching to make sure that you are the right fit for the job. Keep things professional with less jokes, less side banter, less complaining. Focus on your job and doing it right when they are around. This is a time, where knowing your niche and showing off your skill sets will benefit you. Do what is asked of you.
  11. Bring a positive attitude to work – Do not be that person that is always incessantly complaining about doing a job that they applied for, knowing the criteria and what is asked of them. Be positive and bring a good energy to work. This will help time go by faster and help the team maintain a level head if someone is having a bad day. If you started on a bad note, try to recuperate and end things on a good note. Having a good perspective on the idea of working, and trying your best to make it enjoyable with positive energy, will do more than just help your coworkers feel better. It will honestly probably score you more tips. A happy, positive environment is an environment that customers enjoy.
