The Body Feels Better When You…

TAKE CARE OF IT.

Wahoo! Let’s talk about self-care in detail a little bit here.

Ways to promote self-care:

  1. Exercise – Boost your levels of endorphin’s by channeling some exercise into your daily routine. Whether it is taking the stairs, walking to work, or intense cardio, exercise is one way to promote self-care. It will leave you feeling fresh and fine!! The more fitness, the happier the mind, soul, and body will be.
  2. Taking care of your outward appearance – This may sound contradictory, but the better you take care of yourself with showers, tooth brushing, etc., the better you will feel about your outward appearance. Do this not for anyone else, but yourself. If you dress better, and in something you feel comfortable in, you will spend less time pondering how to look and feel better.
  3. EAT. EAT. EAT. – You can always resort to eating foods that are better for you, and just by eating in general. Your body lives off of the food you feed it, so naturally, you should feel inclined to satisfy its’ needs. Try staying away from greasy foods, and try to stay natural. The better you eat, the better you will feel.
  4. Drink MORE water – Now, there’s no need to dehydrate yourself from drinking too much water, but drinking more water is always the key to feeling more energized, feeling more focused, and feeling better about yourself. Even try tea, because water sometimes gets boring. I would also recommend throwing some fruits or some veggies into your water to give it some flavor. Herbal tea is an excellent solution to water, as well. Most of your body is made up of water, so may as well hydrate, right?
  5.  Finding proper stress-management techniques suited for your own unique self РThis is more of a personal one. But, finding ways to combat your own anxiety and handle life as mentally prepared as you can, is difficult, but an important aspect of self-care. The goal of life is to be as de-stressed as possible, so make an effort to find ways to beat your stress in a positive way.

Life Hack #2: Count Them Up

Count them up! That’s what I say about blessings, count them up ALWAYS!

Remembering where you came from, aka your humble beginnings are where you should begin counting your blessings. The very fact that your parents conceived you into this world and gave you life is a blessing.

Take a minute to breathe, be mindful. If you are not sure what being mindful means, it means being present, aware of your CURRENT surroundings, taking a minute to focus on your current reality, and taking a breathe between every cluttered thought that is running through your head. Listen to the odd sounds of your neighbors stepping around their apartment, to the snow falling down, to the taste of your coffee…embrace being here right now at this very moment. Embrace your life, as you sit here, hopefully breathing in and out, appreciating every aspect, including the messes within your life. Now, exhale. Do not hold that breathe in too long, that’s not the point of this article! ūüôā

In about every Snapchat story DJ Khaled exclaims either, “blessings, on blessings, on blessings,” or “bless up.” Whether he understands the concept of blessings is beyond me, however, he brings up a good point.

Turning off your cellular devices and technological devices, and breaking life down to its’ bare minimums is what mindfulness requires of you. Now, you can buy books and read up on this mindfulness stuff. Hey, do not feel embarrassed I have one too.

This book serves as a reminder of how important it is that I realize that every waking minute I am alive I should be grateful for. Similarly, I realize how important and meaningful every second I am alive is.

We all forget to be grateful from time to time, forgetting to thank whoever it is we would like to believe is our god that we are grateful we are alive today, right here, right now.

So many lives are ruined and destructed by the ugly parts of this world, as violence and warfare are being used as weapons against humanity and an excuse for power and dominance over others.

Our lives could be, hypothetically ruined, or taken away from us in any minute. This is why it is so important to me that I count my blessings at least once a week. I am so grateful for the job I have currently, the ability to have been able to attend such a prestiguous university, the roof over my head, the laptop I am currently using to type this article, and most importantly my overall health and well-being. Not all of us are blessed with the things I have listed above, making it much more important to me to remind myself of my blessings daily and that things could be much worse.

Personally, I keep a “Blessings Jar,” where I write things that made me happy every day that I can remember to do it. At the very beginning when I began this little project, it was difficult and almost fake, writing down all my blessings as I took these for granted every day. But, as I began getting into the repetition of doing this, I slowly began to take a look at my beautiful life and flip a new perspective in my life.

It is easy enough to forget your blessings in this fast-paced society, which constantly tugs and pulls at your attention. Instead of looking at the shallow, materialistic things we appreciate, I’ve found that I needed to search a little deeper and look at the things that truly matter to me, which were the unmaterialistic things, such as my health, my education, my relationship with my parents and my brother, having such a tight knit family, and the ability to smile every day that I am alive. Smiling, just like breathing, is something we all forget to be grateful for.

Take a closer, more thorough look into your life and find the blessings that are disguised amongst all the clutter. In every “bad”¬†situation, there is something positive outcome you can take out of it. Remember, even when it is so hard to, that there is always a silver lining to every situation, action and reaction we encounter in life.

Remember, you are blessed NOT stressed!

Growing Pains: Liberate Me

Be the most genuine form of yourself. It’s liberating!

As difficult as it may be sometimes, as we are constantly changing and growing, being the person you are and feel at this very moment is something one must learn to do as we grow into different stages in our lives.

How you genuinely spend your days alone is no one’s business and does not dictate the person you are.

Being genuine means honesty, which is the ultimate form of kindness and genuinity. You will be surprised how much love will be in your life when you begin embracing every bone in your body, and begin being honest with the most important person in your life, yourself.

This genuine person is the real person behind all of your Instagram posts, and perceived outward images.

Who are you when you are all alone?

Who are you today? Who are you tomorrow? Will you be the same person? Will you be happy with yourself?

The amount of love and happiness that will come out of being genuine is incredible. Plus, feeling like you have no shame or anything to hide or lie about is a liberating aspect of unleashing your true self. Unlimited amounts of happiness and love is not hard to attain, if you are living for your own self, free of labels, or societal expectations. This should also bring a sense of stability within your life, as you will not be constantly changing who you are for others. And, any source of stability is a blessing in this world.

Finding yourself at any age and embracing the person you are at this current moment is a hard feat for anyone, including myself.

But what I have learned is that, if you stop basing your image of yourself based on what others are doing or what they think, and do what you truly want to be doing, you can find a genuine sense of self. This applies to any aspect of your life.

Living a life based on what you want others to think of you is toxic. Constantly spend more time embracing yourself and celebrating yourself.

Days may be long and challenging as you try to find out what you truly want in this world, but finding peace within yourself is one way to combat the chaos of our society.

I stand by the idea that anything you do with your friends, you should feel comfortable doing by yourself. Finding that genuine side of yourself will allow you to embrace the idea of independence, find a drive to live your life as you would like to, and allow you to comfortably spend time alone, rather than always in a group setting.

Completely isolating yourself is not the goal of finding yourself. You need to be able to find a balance between being with friends and company, and making time to spend time doing what you love.

You should love every aspect of your life, just as you should love every aspect of yourself.

Embrace your soul and be a soulful, passionate person that you were put on this world to be.

How To Make Work More Fun

UGH. BLAH. BLECH. We all get it….we all hate going to work, and even the idea of working kind of sucks.

Every day that we have to go into work there’s that little voice inside the back of your head telling you to call into work sick, come up with some malignant lie about how your grandmother is dying in the hospital, etc. Here are some ways you can make work a little more enjoyable:

  1. Befriend your coworkers – Being in an environment with friends can make all shifts seem shorter and less grueling. The more friends you are able to make at work, the more enjoyable the job may seem. Cracking jokes and asking your coworkers questions, or simply just treating them like they are your friend, will assist in making work seem more of a fun environment than just a workplace.
  2. Put in 100% effort when going into work – As backwards as this seems, keeping yourself busy with mindless actions can help the day go by faster. Pick up the slack of your other coworkers, and find new things to do around your work space that can help both you and your team.
  3. Think of all the other things you would not be doing if you were not at work – Literally, what else would you be doing/? I know I’m not the only one that does not want to move or crawl out of their bed in the morning just because you have to pee. Most of the population does a version of Netflix and chill, or just hang around doing nothing.
  4. Think of the money you are making – Money, though it does not dictate much, is necessary to survive in this world. Think of all the money you are making, as you contrast, what you would be doing at home not getting paid.
  5. Find a decent paying job that does not require overtime hours to make a living – Being paid strictly minimum wage is rough, especially when the perks are not so enticing. Try finding a job where you can make tips, which will increase your pay just a little more. You could also just find a job that pays more than minimum wage, try shooting for something that may be a reach. Everyone needs to make a living, wherever you decide to work, make sure to weigh out the pros and cons of how much your pay is, and whether you feel as though you are getting paid evenly for the work that you put in.
  6. Try to stay at a job for longer than six months – Constantly trying to find a new job, because you are bored of your other job, or got fired, etc. is draining. Job hunting is a hard feat as it is, and finding the perfect job is not quite realistic when you are just trying to make ends meet. Having to be trained at nine different new things, having to meet new coworkers, having to figure out the ropes of a new job is ultimately tiring. Finding a steady long-term job will help decrease levels of anxiety about every aspect of working. Once you’ve learned the ropes of a new job, stick with it for a while. Sticking with a job can come with rewards, such as bonuses, wage raises, and a great recommendation.
  7. Figure out what you are good at – Figure out what you are good at and stick with it. Find a job that lines up with your interests and is not extremely stressful, because it is not something you excel in. Finding your niche can help set you apart from other workers, and show your team where the best position to utilize you is. Once you’re being put to good use, you will find that the rest of your team will have less anxiety, as you will excel in that position, and the compliments will be flying out the door.
  8. Messing up sucks – This is slightly negative, but you will make mistakes anywhere you work. It is impossible to be perfect, and yes, everyone knows how much messing up sucks. The longer you are with a company, the less likely you are to make mistakes, as you begin to master your work environment. Take the constructive criticisms as what they are, not as a dictator of what you are worth. Similarly, the longer you work somewhere, the easier it is to overcome your mess ups and hopefully joke around about your mistakes in the past.
  9. Communicate with everyone on the team – Learn to communicate with others on your team. The more you communicate, the less likely there will be confusion. Speak with your manager if you are feeling like you are being scheduled too much or too little. If you need a favor, tell your other coworkers what you need from them. Ask, talk, and communicate – these are all things that will make work much less painful.
  10. Be on good behavior around the owner – Being on good behavior in general is a must in making your work experience much more enjoyable. Being in the good graces of your owner or management staff is something that you will realize is vital is maintaining a job, getting good recommendations, etc. Management is who you report to generally if you are beginning a job, they are constantly watching to make sure that you are the right fit for the job. Keep things professional with less jokes, less side banter, less complaining. Focus on your job and doing it right when they are around. This is a time, where knowing your niche and showing off your skill sets will benefit you. Do what is asked of you.
  11. Bring a positive attitude to work – Do not be that person that is always incessantly complaining about doing a job that they applied for, knowing the criteria and what is asked of them. Be positive and bring a good energy to work. This will help time go by faster and help the team maintain a level head if someone is having a bad day. If you started on a bad note, try to recuperate and end things on a good note. Having a good perspective on the idea of working, and trying your best to make it enjoyable with positive energy, will do more than just help your coworkers feel better. It will honestly probably score you more tips. A happy, positive environment is an environment that customers enjoy.

The Perks Of Living An Honest Life

Some people are good at deceiving others, while others are unable to lead a lifestyle full of lies. It’s completely up to the individual how you choose to go about living your life, as it is YOUR life.

How you gain fulfillment from life is unique and a different experience for each and every individual.

With that said, you will lie more than once just to save your ass every once in a while. The guilt really eats you alive, though, which then leads to guilt, which often leads to self-destructive behavior.

Honesty is hard to come by, but why lie? After a while, you can never remember or keep up with your lies. You begin steering away from not only being yourself, but you begin to embark on a journey of discontentment and behaviors that are unlike you.

Once you start, it may be hard to stop, depending on how you decide to handle the situation. Best advice? Just don’t.

Chances are you will always slip up and the truth eventually always comes out, even when you do not mean for it to happen and have been working so hard to conceal it. Having an acting gig as a full-time career is great when you are a part of movie productions, but not when it comes to establishing a genuine, happy, and fulfilling life.

You gain so much out of being honest that lies become a distant memory. Honesty also saves you a lot of time, steers you from troublesome events, and allows you to truly embrace the the reality that is placed in front of you.

Lies are messy, and they are a disaster. Hurricanes and natural disasters are dangerous, but so is a life spent living a lie.
Lying steers you away from being able to find yourself, as your lies become your life. Nothing about you becomes genuine, as people will begin losing interest in unproductive habit.

Though honesty may seem more intimidating than meeting your biggest celebrity crush or idol, it is the best form of damage control, if you want to avoid future problems. And, the problems will only become bigger, overwhelming, and uncontrollable.

Do not be selfish and misuse people’s trust. Live a life that you can be proud of, not a life that is completely bogus. I guarantee you will end up being more unhappy than you were before you told the lie to begin with.

Honesty is an act of courage and can be viewed as a reflection of a person. Hold yourself to a higher standard. Do not just stop lying to those around you, but also stop lying to yourself. Unless you are trying to end up lost in the Sahara Desert with no food or water, let the bad habit slip. Even the smallest white lie will catch up with you.

Trying to find your inner happiness? It does not start with lying. Do not fret though, young grasshopper, today is a new day and there’s never an expiration date on changing your habits.

Finally, if you do not want to be lied to than do not spend time lying. Give honesty, and you will receive it.

Funky Times

Feeling stressed, bored, and incredibly blah? I know the feeling. These days are actually inevitable, as you just wake up and can not really seem to be able to overcome this lack of satisfaction and passion for life.

UGH is the word I would use to describe my moods on these days. The sun can not shine every god damn day, right?

These days are the days that you just need to ride out, take up the bunghole, and just accept. You hate them because they’re challenging, and I also hate these days, because it’s just that much harder to get out of that funk.

At some point, you will overcome the funk, but until then, you just have to ride it out and do the best you can.

My best advice is to keep fighting and keep trying, as things may not go your way for a while.

How to get out of the funk? Well, that’s a question that I can not answer, but only life can answer for you. How you react and choose to handle your funky moods is the only way that you can control aspects of your life that you are unable to control.

There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel every day, even when you’re in your funks, as things can only usually get better if they’re so bad.

These small glimmers of hope and unexpected shifts of happiness and gratitude are what help me get through my funky times. We can all make our lives seem perfect, and many of us mask our moody times very well and discretely.

The worst part of your funk is the uncertainty of how long the hard times will keep slapping you in the face. It truly just depends, because funky times can last longer or shorter than you ever expected. The worst part? It is COMPLETELY OUT OF YOUR CONTROL.

If you’re feeling like your life is out of control, don’t worry you’re exactly where you need to be at this exact moment. Worry some, but do not worry too much. If you’ve made it this far, you’ve made it 100% of the time. So, the odds are in your favor.

Don’t let the funk become you for too long, but sometimes embrace the funk, ride it out, and know, at the end of the day, you will be okay. Keep your hope alive and never forget to try!

White Noise

“Hey! What’s going on out there?” I always seem to be thinking that every time I am home or even outside. There always seems to be SOMETHING happening around us, making it hard to pay attention to the things that actually matter.

What is white noise? You may ask. Well, to me, white noise is anything unnecessary that provides stimulation for individuals. Whether it be drama, or someone spreading malicious rumors, or overhearing someone talking about you behind their back, this is all just a distraction from school, work, or however you are choosing to spend your time.

People can also be white noise, as some individuals may not bring all that much good into your life. Individuals who bring drama, and unnecessary baggage, are included in the category of white noise.

How do you ignore though? I just rub the dirt off of my shoulders and fill my time with meaningful things, which allows me to simultaneously ignore all the meaningless things that will no longer serve a purpose for you in about a week.

Rumors are also what I consider white noise. The game of telephone is a game that people enjoy playing that results in the most epic failure and horrible rumors. The best way to handle horrible rumors, or white noise? Ignore it all and be productive. It almost helps to be so immersed with your life that no one else matters, other than yourself, OF COURSE.

If you are zoned into your own world, you have no time to pay attention to the meaningless bullshark that tends to arise all the time.

These distractions can be seen as challenges, or hard times, or simply confusing. The goals of distractions and white noise is to steer your focus from what really matters to things that will not make a difference in your life in about five years.

imgresimages-1

The first step to every issue is to address and acknowledge the problem. As you grow older, there becomes less and less time to acknowledge and internalize the white noise. You soon begin to realize how petty, small, and reckless this white noise is. If you are losing focus of your main focus or goal, this just is a simple reminder that you are paying attention to the irrelevant white noise surrounding you.

Test yourself and become aware of what is going on around you.You need to be aware of what is going on around you, in order to tune out the white noise. It is important that you understand that the outside forces, that you cannot control, should not control how you live your daily life. In fact, these outside forces should just be things you spend less than one millisecond thinking about.

At the end of the day, most of the meaningless “stuff” happening around you does not even concern you, so why care? My best advice is to ignore it and do not care about the people who do not mind their own business. White noise is easily avoidable once you are truly able to comprehend how much belittling is happening, rumors are being spread, bullying is continuing, people talking behind each other’s backs, etc. You should not be listening in the first place, let along caring about issues that do not concern you.

These are the people that we either call haters or bullies, those who succeed and thrive off of bringing you down. Do not let them get to you, EVER! No tear should be wasted over things that cannot be helped. Just let the haters hate, and the potatoes potate.

imagesimages-2

Most of the white noise is negative and not productive to be investing your precious time on. Move on and play your musical tunes as loud as ever. In a society focused on white noise, be the 1%, and do not contribute or become the white noise.

C’MON DO NOT BE THE WHITE NOISE!

“People Need People”

Being alone is amazing sometimes, am I right? Sometimes, an excessive amount of alone time is good for the soul. At times, however, it can be detrimental when you forget about the people who are constantly surrounding you and neglect them.

PEOPLE NEED PEOPLE.

That’s final. People require the support of others, especially the nurturing side of other human beings, in order to find solace and inner peace.

We all pretend to hate people or constantly complain about not having enough friends. Additionally, we also find ourselves repetitively stating the fact that we do not have friends nor do we need them to survive.

Our bodies crave the attention of others and constantly are feeding off of the energies of others around us. In order to maintain a peaceful state of mind, and a healthy one at that, one must have a support system, or a proper group of friends.

We also need negative, toxic people in our lives to constantly remind ourselves that even the negative energies that we are exuding towards each other are necessary in order to live a purposeful life.

All human beings need one another not only to learn lessons, grow, mature, but also to maintain stability. Anything in excess, including being with friends, is detrimental to one’s health.

If you are a social butterfly, like I am, it is incredibly important to find time for yourself. However, I crave the energies of my friends and love being around others, constantly learning and finding the good in all people.

All people survive off of each other, and we need each other more than we think we need. It goes beyond getting test answers from each other, working as coworkers, and technological forms of communication.

The livelihood of human beings are dependent on others, so challenge yourself this month to meet new people, ask how their day is, and exude the utmost kindness to everyone, including strangers.

Ask them what their dreams are, what their passions are, where they are from, etc. It does not matter.People can be both a negative and a positive aspect of your life, however, they are fundamental and a necessity in order to live a life full of happiness, wonder, and love.

Let love in and let love out. People, even the ones who do not vocalize it or think about it, are relying on you more than you know. We all need each other, simple as that.

Whether you choose a crowd that is unfavorable or a favorable crowd, it is up to you. Protect yourself from the inevitable people, such as bullies, toxic humans, those who bring you down, however, show them happiness, love, and kindness.

Those who are unhappy are not the only ones needing extra love and kindness, sometimes human beings can be gifted in hiding their sadness, and lack of love, so naturally, show love and be the love you would like to see in the world. Or, as Mahatma Gandhi says, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

Without others guiding us or misleading us in different directions, life would be boring, meaningless, unstimulated, and impractical.

Do not forget how many people are counting on you EVER. Constantly remind yourself of this every morning, not everyone vocalizes their need for others and their need for love.

Support your own species! Join the movement in building a community filled with love, happiness, and joy.

The Road Less Traveled

Some days you feel lazy, challenged, a little unmotivated, angry, frustrated, bored, sad, and irate about this crazy world we live in. This is quite alright, actually.

What is your ultimate vice to cover up the guilt, anxiety, and pressures of modern day society? I have countless, and as the saying goes, old habits die hard. I used to cope with the abuse of a variety of illicit narcotics, but now have turned my unexerted, and unlimited energy towards other habits, such as blogging, hiking, coloring, shopping and working full-time.

It is not easy to turn away from your old, toxic habits, as they are cyclical parts of our day-to-day life. The simple act of going to Starbucks every morning and drinking a Venti Caramel Macchiato can be categorized as an old toxic coping mechanism, as none of us really should be drinking 3 shots of espresso in our coffee every day.

The key to success is maintaining composure, and a level-head, when you are stressed. Turning your unexerted stress towards positive habits, such as your health, new found hobbies, staying on top of your school work, and hanging out with positive influences can be a way to take the road less traveled.

You see, none of these old, toxic habits are serving you any good. Though it is alright to slip up a few times, as I have time-and-time again, recognizing, addressing, and acting upon being aware of your old habits is the key to success.

Some days I find myself bored, and unsatisfied with life. I am constantly doing the same thing every day, working full-time, coloring and shopping. I also attend therapy once a week to switch up my routine.

By taking the road less traveled on, and working hard to combat these habits, you will begin to lead a life of happiness and simplicity. All things that every human being craves. The key to understanding why you must take the road less traveled on is thinking about more than “the now.” You must learn to think long-term and think about your long-term goals before deciding to be impulsive and reckless. These small habitual toxic habits that you engage in are a big part of who you are as a person, but learning to persevere through the tough times, especially when you are overwhelmed, is a skill that cannot be taught or mastered. We all make mistakes sometimes.

The road less traveled on is much more difficult and time-consuming than one would hope, which is why it is the route that is traveled on much less. In the long run, however, the outcomes will be enormous, and will be self-fulfilling. The best feeling in the world is learning how much your hard work pays off, even through the thick and the thin. Not every day is easy, and not every day is fun, especially when you’re traveling in the opposite direction than others. Chances are very high that you will feel lost, uncomfortable, vulnerable, unstable, emotional, irate, sad, happy, relieved, etc.

This is all natural. Life is supposed to be challenging, so why not take up the challenge now? It is never too late to change. Today is a new day – another day for you to change.

Validation from others is the reason why others turn their cheek and travel in the most traveled on road. Sometimes we can be prone to take this route, however, take small steps towards change and rewards will come in surplus.

Appreciate the challenge and embrace the challenge. As Nike exclaims, “JUST DO IT!”And, as 2Chainz most famously stated, “I’m different, yeah, I’m different!” Embrace being different and taking a different route than everyone, because no one is the same and the route that they may decide to take is probably drastically different from yours.

Change your perspective ad shoot for the stars, loves. Aim high, work hard, and keep your expectations low. Do not rush the process, as it is a lifelong process. Adapt to your current situation, whatever it may take, and begin there. Make a list of things you wish to change about yourself, and then most importantly, make changes and take action! Actions always speak louder than words.

Lastly, do not do this for anyone other than yourself. After a while, doing the same shit for years becomes a bore. This is simply just a sign that you are growing and maturing. Figuring out what you like and do not like, standing up for yourself, and loving yourself are all things that become incredibly uncomfortable, as you will find yourself spending more and more time alone. Uncomfortable is good – it simply means you found some inspiration to grow, mature, and take action against your old habits.

Do not be so hard on yourself, but take up this challenge, and do things you do not normally do. Make yourself uncomfortable, in order to face the uncomfortability. Remember those who mind, do not matter.

Ballin’ On A Budget

As you soon begin to realize that money does not simply grow on trees, you will also realize that you have less money to spend on things you enjoy. For me, my joy is coloring books, candles, clothes, shoes, food and accessories.

All these things can be found at just about any retail chain, however, it all depends on whether the price is right.

I have to ball out on a budget, sort of speak, as I am in college and have obligatory payments that I must make.

I try to make purchases that are:

  1. Reasonably Priced – Who knows how much money you have on you, or whether you are just trying to spend your last paycheck. Make sure that the price is right on what you are buying. Take into consideration the pros and cons of making your purchase. Try shopping at places, such as Amazon, Safeway, King Soopers, Walmart, Walgreens, H&M, Urban Outfitters, Ragstock, PacSun, Forever 21, Crossroads Trading Company, Buffalo Exchange, and/or any “buy, sell, and trade” store. If you are feeling conflicted on whether or not to purchase the item, see how much you truly want it and come back later. Chances are you can find better deals online or in-store, if you look hard enough.
  2. Quality Over Quantity –¬†Check to see the condition of the quality of the product. In this case, less is more. This may not be the case for food, however, the quality of your food, aka what you put into your body, is important. In regards to clothing, accessories, and shoes, quality is of utmost importance. You would rather have an item that is made well and will last a lifetime, over clothes that will fall apart on you quickly. Investments in essentials, such as jeans, pants, and basics, are things that directy correlate with the idea behind quality over quantity. Art supplies are best bought in quality if you are pursuing an art career or are truly passionate about the activity.
  3. Skip The Brand Names – In regards to everything I purchase, brand name does not matter to me, just as long as the quality is there. Food does not apply to this rule as buying brand name items from, Kroger, Safeway, and Walgreens make the purchase much cheaper. In terms of clothing, shoes, and accessories, it is the complete opposite. Brand name products, such as, Free People, Steve Madden, Gucci, Fendi, Yves Saint Laurent, Repossi, and Louis Vitton, to name a few, are not essential to your wardrobe. I find that consignment stores and “buy, sell, and trade” stores, such as Crossroads Trading¬†Company, Buffalo Exchange and Plato’s Closet sell brand name items for much cheaper, at an affordable price to the public.
  4. Head Straight To The Sale Section – Ignore the full-priced items and aim to buy things from the sale section. If you look hard enough in the messy sale section of retail stores, such as PacSun, Urban Outfitters, H&M, Ragstock, Crossroads Trading Company, and even Free People you are always bound to find something that is below retail price and a good deal. Scanning the entirety of the sale section helps your wallet and your bank account. Waiting until things go onto sale is something that I do. Keep eyeing what you want, and hopefully, fingers crossed, the item will be set aside on the sale racks for you to buy discounted.
  5. Mall Employee Deals – Take advantage of any deals and discounts you may receive if you work at a mall or a shopping district. Always mention that you work around the area in case you are able to get a discount on regular priced items. Some malls offer amazing discounts, such as 10%-20% discounts on their merchandise. Always ask and mention that to any employee that you encounter in your shopping district.
  6. Patience – Being patient and looking carefully, all while comparing prices is vital. As mentioned above, weigh out the pros and the cons, and see whether or not this is an impulse buy or not. If the item you wish to buy is still there next time you return, then perhaps it’s fate that you should buy the item.
  7. Only Buy Full-Priced Items If You CANNOT STOP THINKING ABOUT IT OR ABSOLUTELY NEED IT РI apply this rule to most of my attire. I refuse to buy anything full price unless I cannot stop thinking about it or actually need the item. Most times, items will always be in stock, unless you wait a few months, especially in regards to retail. In regards to food, do the same. Try to find deals on food items that have a special deal, such as 2 for $7 on an item. Places like King Soopers, Walgreens, Walmart, Safeway, Trader Joes, etc. offer deals on regular priced items. Keep your eyes pealed. Additionally, if you feel as though you will absolutely eat the food, buy it. Make sure to be careful about buying items that you will not eat or use in the future.
  8. Keep Your Eyes Pealed For Additional Discounts & Random Sales РMany retail stores and grocery stores change up their sale and discounted food. Subscribing to online emails allows you to stay updated on current deals that are only for a limited time. Be sure to be aware of them! Shop carefully and smart.
  9. Decide How Much You Want To Spend Ahead Of Time –¬†If you decide a number in your head of how much money you wish to spend a day, you will not only be budgeting, but saving money on the useless crap that fills up our closets, refrigerators, and houses. Shopping is not a sin, however, it is easy for one to get caught up on spending money. Just before you even realize it, all your money is gone. Pulling out a certain amount of cash assists me in budgeting, allowing me only to spend a certain amount of cash.
  10. Sign Up For Their Rewards Program – Sign up for reward programs with as many stores as possible, as you will gain points, while simultaneously spending less money, through the designated program. Most times after a certain amount of money spent at any place, you will receive rewards, discounts, or even gift cards, or free items. Not only are you helping yourself, but you feel less guilty spending money at the location.
  11. Make A List Of Things You Need – This helps, in the case of food, clothing, art supplies, etc. Deciding what you need or truly want is important, so you will not get sidetracked while you are there. All the distractions, especially at the cash register counter, are all items placed strategically so that the customer will spend more money. Go in knowing what you want and need, and always do not hesitate to ask for assistance. A list will allow you to also budget and will give you a general idea of how much money you will be spending. Though this is a little bit harder when it comes to clothing, shoes and accessory shopping, having a general idea of what you are willing to spend and what you are looking for is always key.
  12. Check Out More Than One Store РLook around and be patient with your shopping. Do not just limit yourself to one, single store. Shop around, find deals, compare prices, and find a store that will give you the biggest bang for your buck. I shop around at many retail outlets, being especially selective about prices and the quality of the product. The quality of the product and prices often differ from store-to-store, try to find a reasonably priced retail outlet to get the best deals. Similarly, when it comes to shopping for food, art supplies, interior decoration, school supplies, check out more than one store. All stores are competing with each other to achieve the lowest price for your best dollar. The choices are endless and chances are you will find a place that will satisfy your budget and your needs.
  13. Shop Online¬†– Online stores usually have sales ongoing that most stores do not have. Similarly, the online shops may have more merchandise than that displayed in the stores. Additionally their sale sections are naturally much more organized, with a wider selection. Online sale sections for stores listed above are much more extensive, including more of a variety of the merchandise, than that in store. This list provides a set of rules that you can follow, especially when you are ballin’ on a budget. Save money for all the things you enjoy in life, while also budgeting, and deciphering the pros and cons of the purchase. Shopping smart and hard are always key! Keep your eyes on the prize and realize that deals are out there, as long as you look hard enough.

Growing Pains

Oh, the pains of growing up. What does growing up even mean?

Since turning 21, I have realized that the concept of growing up is absolutely absurd, and extremely difficult, especially in your early 20s. The early years of your 20s are some of the most uncomfortable, yet fufilling years of your life, as you try to navigate through all the bullshark that life ends up throwing your way. Even your parents slowly become distant figures in your life, as they push you to try to make you the most independent version of yourself. You may even find yourself having multiple panic attacks about experiencing quarter-life crisis’s, and will definitely find yourself facing more challenges.

Your early 20s are spent figuring out and discovering that the world is not so black-and-white, and things are never always in your control. Not having control over every aspect of your life is something that you need to realize quick, as you may grow apart from friends, experience anxiety about your future, etc.

Spending time by yourself, just trying to figure yourself out is one of the best ways I have dealt with my uncomfortably, awkward anxiety attacks. Honestly, I did not even have my life mapped out for my 20s, as they always seemed so far away.

With that said,

  1. Speak your mind and utilize your voice.

The best life advice I have received of coming of age is that you should always speak your mind, and speak it well, and intelligently. Lauren Conrad wrote a similar article on her blog stating 10 things she wished she would have known in her early 20s, and speaking your mind is one of the most efficient ways to maintain healthy friendships, standing up to bullies, etc. Your voice should be used to be heard. Do not let anyone or anything silence you, asking for what you need and want is far from a crime. The worst thing that could come out of asking for something and speaking your mind, is the answer “no,” or a negative comment.

  2.  Spend as much time alone as possible.

This seems counterproductive and a little depressing, however, the positive benefits of hanging out with oneself plays such a huge role in the process of growing up.

Finding what you like and what you do not like are some things that come out of hanging out with yourself. Finding independence in a society that places the utmost importance on co-dependence is almost a freeing experience. You are no longer held back by the fear of doing stuff alone, rather you crave doing things alone and find solace in your daily activities.

Induce your creativity and find new hobbies to partake in. No matter how old you are or how awkward it may seem dating yourself is one of the best ways to make the growing pains a little less painful.

  3. Place importance on your education and obligations.

Whether you’re in school or not in school, and simply just working, it is important that you make these things a priority in your life, as they play a huge role in your life outside of school. Attend work and school obligations on time and realize how much working hard at aspects of your life will result in ultimate happiness.

You may not be happy, in the moment while you are working hard, however, in the long-run many opportunities may present themselves.
Whether it is setting yourself apart by cleaning the bathrooms at work, picking up coffee for the administrative assistant that you work for, seize every opportunity to set yourself apart from others. Being self-motivated is one of the best attributes to attain, when you are going through the process of growing up.

   4.                             Grasp every opportunity for success that you may come across.

This is incredibly important, as life does not offer too many free lemons for you to make unlimited amounts of lemonade. After a while, the opportunities stop presenting themselves, if you keep denying them. Whether you are grasping an opportunity to make a new friend or grasping a job promotion, work hard for it, try to say “yes,” as often as possible. You do not want to be left with the question “what if?” that will constantly haunt your mind.

5.                          Forget the drama, and do not even leave it for your mama.

Literally, you may fight every one of your so called “good friends,” while you are facing life’s biggest challenge of growing up. Yes, your group of friends will downsize considerably, as you begin to realize that most of the friends you made over the last few years, have become distant enemies or acquaintances. This is quite normal and perfectly alright. However, when it comes to drama, leave it alone and let it be. Do not pay any mind to it, because in a few years, your name will be nothing but an old ghost town. Drama is pointless and a distraction from what really matters. Try to avoid it as much as possible. Leave rumors alone, and do not entertain them.

              6.                              Start a bucket list

Make a bucket list full of your biggest fears, dreams, ect, and most importantly, start checking off the activities you have completed. Bucket lists can almost serve as goals you want to achieve, or just can include fun activities that you can participate in when you have the time. Things like, cliff jumping, graduating college, bungee jumping, starting a blog, traveling to Iceland and finishing a whole entire coloring book are things that are on my bucket list.

           7.                               Find new hobbies or join a club

Forget the partying, after you hit your early 20s, no one even cares to go out every night of the weekend, due to circumstantial obligations. New hobbies, other than partying, can serve as healthy activities that you can utilize when you are feeling super bored. This is not to say that you should not go out at all, but to find a balance between having fun and hobbies. Partying should NOT be your only hobby, as this will not get you very far.

Journaling, coloring, hiking, blogging and shopping are some of my favorite past times, as I try to engage in healthy hobbies every day. Find something you like, and stick with it. If it makes you happy, who cares what you are doing.

Joining a club can also serve as a positive outlet to meet new people and form new friendships. Volunteering is also a fun way to assist your local community, all while spending time doing something positive.

NOTE TO ALL: YOUR EARLY 20s ARE SOME OF THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE YEARS OF YOUR LIFE. EVERYONE IS GOING THROUGH SIMILAR EXPERIENCES DISCOVERING WHO THEY ARE, WHAT THEY WANT TO DO WITH THEIR LIVES, ETC. We all deal with the uncomfortable growing pains of life. Learn to embrace them and find ways to combat your uncomfortability. This is a crucial time in any individuals life, as we are all learning how to come of age, how to be mature, and how to be independent. Do not let life discourage you. WE ARE ALL GOING THROUGH QUARTER-LIFE CRISES, it’s up to you how you choose to handle it.
